Real Estate 101

I love travelling to China. In Shenzhen, five years ago, the big buzz was about the new link between western Shenzhen (Lo Wu) and Hong Kong. This was supposed to ease travel from Hong Kong into the growing parts of western Shenzhen.

I casually remarked that now would be a pretty good time to buy property in Lo Wu.

Early this morning, I checked out Google Earth. The link is here. Note the large amount of heavy construction in Lo Wu (upper left peninsula, lower right is Hong Kong). I’m still betting this is going to be the nicest part of Shenzhen when the bridge is done, and only 30 min from the airport. Anyone know if the bridge will connect into Hong Kongs MTR?

And for those of you who aren’t yet selling to Huawei, here’s a shot of the HQ.

I need to get back to China.

Ferris Bueller on Digital Rights Management

car.jpgDRM is a neccesary evil, but it won’t stop everyone. It only slows the velocity of illegal behavior. Making media easy to access and consume would have an even greater effect.

HP and Dow Fatigue

Anyone else sick and tired of hearing about HP, Dunn, and Pretexting? Running a close second is the Dow nearing an all time high. Ugh.

Verizon Opens the FiOS Kimono

Historically, Verizon (VZ) has held it’s FiOS FTTH subscriber numbers close to the vest, and has not provided detailed information about penetration rates or success metrics. Today, they opened the kimono.

PMC Sierra Q306 Revenue Miss

PMC-Sierra (PMCS) announced a revenue shortfall today. They had guided to $124M and now indicate $116M is more likely. They specifically highlight telecom component demand issues in Asia.

My qualitative information on wireline telecom component demand in China indicates things are going smoothly. It’s possible that PMC’s issues are with GE-PON demand. It’s possible my qualitative info is wrong- Xilinx lowered guidance based on Asian demand and they are a good bellwether.

So, to answer all of you that have asked, I do not know what is going on. At least not yet.

I do not hold any positions with PMC Sierra

Apple Overload and Zune Confusion

swingers.jpgI’m tired of reading about Apple’s ho-hum iTV announcement. And the Microsoft Zune strategy is incomprehensible. I don’t want the new PG-13 Microsoft that everyone likes. I want the old, evil, R-rated Microsoft you’re not sure you like.

Cortina Acquires Intel Comm Semi’s

cash-cow.jpgIt’s official. Looks like Cortina acquired a digestible portion of Intel’s (INTC) comm semi product line, forgoing the network processors that would bring high SG&A overhead. They focused on the parts they could plug into the company to generate cash flow.

GPON Interoperability Smokescreen

fsan.gifFSAN has completed their first GPON interoperability testing. Interoperability of GPON systems is important, since the ITU standard ultimately should yield systems that interface more smoothly than the loosely defined GE-PON specification.

What’s Going On in Optical

OK, since I’ve been called out by Om Malik, I’m going to let rip with a stream-of-conciousness monologue on optical. No backspace key, no delete key, spelling corrections ex-post-facto. Here goes.
