Mediatemple Outage

Mediatemple, the company that hosts this website as well as thousands of others, is down (again). They’ve gone from being outstanding to being worse than my previous hosting provider, Bluehost, which says a lot. Before they switched to an on-demand Grid based system, things were awesome. Now, the reliability is just plain terrible.

I’ll pay money to have a reliable host. I just can’t seem to find one.

UPDATE: Things have stabilized for now, with Mediatemple promising a ’1.1′ release of Grid Server that should help. In addition, they comped me two months of hosting fees. While comping fees is the right thing to do, it doesn’t begin to compensate for extended downtime.

  3. Had the problem yesterday. Today seems fine. Tomorrow’s another day.

  4. Things seem fine now. I wish they hadn’t moved everyone over to the grid so quickly… that was the real problem. In the long run, it should be great.

  5. Andrew,

They have been having problems since launch, do you really think it’ll get vbetter?

  6. If you can afford it, or if you NEED uptime – Don’t host, Colocate.

  7. Or better yet, host with Rackspace or Datapipe. We’ve been hosting with rackspace for almost a year, a low-end dedicated box. We pay heavily for it, but we’ve experienced zero network outage and zero hardware outage (except for a few announced, well in advance, maintenance tasks). Had a few minor software issues, but they were all resolved very rapidly. Our bandwidth is premium and server connections are always super snappy. I hear Datapipe is just as good and a little cheaper. I’ll stick with Rackspace for now because I KNOW they are reliable. I hope Media Temple gets things worked out though. I want to move some things to the Grid.

  8. We have launched a blog in efforts to further our communications with our audience.

This post chronicles the advances we’ve made with the GRID thus far:

  9. Andrew,

I have been following your postings regarding Vitesse Semiconductor. It’s quite disappointing to say the least. I’ve owned Vitesse shares for over 8-years, always believing in the Company’s leadership and technology. Louis Tomesseta is the biggest disappointment. Personally, I don’t think Vitesse has a leg to stand on, the’ve lost all of their business good will. IMHO Tomessata and the other two stooges should go to jail.

Regarding web hosting, I agree with you 100% about Blue Host. It’s a terrible company. Matt Heaton continually blogs that things are changing at Blue Host. Ironically, for example, he talks about business and work ethnics, supporting employers (ie. Walmart) that penalize workers for being late, without thinking about his own company’s service standards.

I’m looking for another company with reliable and industry leading services. Let me know how Media Temple works out for you.
