AT&T Sees Rapid Rise in IP Traffic

This is good news and hard evidence to the contrary of what was written by us. "Consumer broadband traffic has risen 145% in the past 2 years, while business traffic rose 60% in 2007 over 2006. Wireless data traffic was up 4X in 2007 over 2006."

  1. Actually, 145% two year consumer growth is right on the six year trend. That’s a little less than 60% per year, which breaks down into 20% new subscribers and 40% increase in bandwidth per subscriber. It happens Comcast per sub 2007 number is 40%, and Odlyzko’s data since 2002 confirms that.

Fortunately, Moore’s Law is bringing down the cost of handling that bandwidth at 25-45% per year, so financially the carriers are about at a wash covering the increased usage. (The new customers pay their own way, of course.)
