In Quebec, we've been delploying Allied Telesis GE-PON with great success. There is no point to pay the G-PON premium IMHO at the moment.

Andrew,

It would be useful to understand the cost per Mbps delivered to the subscriber across GE-PON and GPON/BPON deployments. If someone can come up with better than speciality LD/SOA and packaging that Novera is doing, WDM-PON may very well prove in if cheaper bandwidth > 10Mbps is required (cheaper than GPON). XDSL should be in the tens of $ range per Mbps and xPONs in the few dollars range. Can WDM-PON come in at tens of cents per Mbps?

The reason people think BT are not rolling out any FTTH is a botched press release where BT said "we are not rolling out FTTH..." and forgot to add "...except for Greenfield sites"

See link for first limited deployment.

Japan sure is ahead in terms of Fiber. In Japan you pay about half the price for a broadband connection in comparison with Switzerland.

[...] According to UBS Research, there will be between 1 and 1.3 million fiber homes by end of 2007, and by 2012 this number could hit 10 million. In comparison, US will have 18 million and Japan will have 30 million fiber-connected homes. (Andrew Schmitt has compiled a nice state of the FTTH report.) [...]

Andrew, Is GPON/BPON/GE-PON very relevant? I saw this diagram on Brough Turner's blog on the FTTH elements - http://blogs.nmss.com/communications/2007/05/useful_life_of_.html. Will this allow operators to move to more mature/ cheaper standards over time?
