There were reports of shark attacks when the first transalantic cables were installed see (http://yarchive.net/phone/oceanic_cable.html). Supposedly the sharks were attracted to the electromagnetic radiation from the cables which was similar to dying prey....

Perhaps FTTH signals mimic the scent of a ripe acorn...Squirrels!

[...] Squirrels Collect FiOS for Winter IPTV Festival Apparently, people aren't the only ones waiting for fiber to come to their area. Once upon a time, a squirrel came along an expensive fiber-optic FiOS line and decided to rewire some of it for his little cavern. "I lost my FiOS connectivity Saturday morning, rendering my Verizon (VZ) triple-play package of voice, data, and television inoperative. The culprit? Squirrels," writes Andrew Schmitt.
I've always heard the expression that even a blind squirrel roots up an acorn once in a while. Now I know where blind squirrels come from!!!

Slacker: Fritos and peanut butter? Doesn't the fat content endanger the squirrel?
I assume you care, since that's a live trap :)

Andrew: What happens if the squirrel comes back and chews up the gloves? :)

This squirrel had been living in our crawl space for the last month. He got into the house for a day and chewed up all our windows in his attempted escape. He also chewed up three doors and broke a bunch of plates while running around in a rampage (being chased by our cat)

Long story - short. Squirrels like fritos and peanut butter.

I had FIOS installed in my apartment about 14 months ago and I was actually worried about something like this happening. They left a 30ft fiber run laying above ground for about 2 weeks and we have deer, fox, and teenage kids (obnoxious little buggers) in the area.

I actually helped the cute install lady run the internal wiring (only took about 4.5 hours instead of the 8-9 she estimated when she got there) because I was eager to see if they'd have to rerun the outside lines...
