[...] Regardless, this is exactly what investors should expect from Tivo, and the prospect of forward progress is encouraging. The Tivo/Netflix (NFLX) announcement was supposed to be exactly this, but never happened. [...]

[...] Our frustration with Tivo, something I voiced in my post titled “Tivo Should be Sold” is that the company doesn’t appear to be pursuing either outcome. There has been little in the way of innovative hardware, software, or business models from Tivo in recent months that would indicate a move in either direction. The pursuit of the current business model of selling hardware DVR’s on retail shelves implies a future move to scenario two- the high risk/high reward strategy. However, the lack of any announced partnerships, as well as the vaporware Netflix agreement would indicate it isn’t being pursued aggressively enough. [...]

Tivo may not require tremendous capital to develop such a system. Having alot of deployed boxes and a powerful brand for an easy to use interface are huge assets. Tivo could offer pay per view movies. They could also open themselves up to user generated video content. Imagine if Tivo were to partner with youtube, to offer the top 10 most popular youtube videos, for example. By being more open then the set top initiatives of the telecom providers, and monetizing their audience in more clever ways through advertising, they may be able to achieve a promising future.
