[...] PMC (PMCS) announced at the close today that they are acquiring Passave, a company we have - written - about - extensively, for $300M in stock. In fact, I predicted PMC-Sierra would enter this business through acquisition, though I thought Teknovus would be the better path. Our acquisition of Passave brings PMC-Sierra an experienced and highly innovative team with clear market share leadership in Passive Optical Networking solutions. This acquisition fits with our strategic intent to address the high-growth Fiber Access market and is aligned with PMC’s developments in Customer Premises Equipment,” said Bob Bailey, Chairman and CEO. “PON is the ultimate Triple Play access technology and is key to the build-out of the second generation FTTH-based broadband infrastructure.” [...]

[...] I met with Teknovus and Passave while here at OFC and it’s clear both are going to play an important role going forward. They are the only GE-PON suppliers that matter at this point, and Passave has market leadership today. Teknovus was even kind enough to give me a free copy of Ethernet Passive Optical Networks by Glen Kramer, a Teknovus employee. [...]

I thought it was interesting that Passave moved to announce development of GPON chipsets. Im wondering if adding GPON to the Passave mix will cause them to take their eye off the ball. So far Teknovus has stayed clear of anything GPON and instead is focused on next generation 10GEPON.

[...] A recent post in Nyquist Capital gives an analysis of GEPON chip vendors Teknovus and Passave. Although Passave took the early lead in shipping product to Mitsubishi in Japan for the NTT FTTH deployment, Teknovus has recently introduced a chipset that meets NTT’s requirements for dynamic bandwidth allocation and other features. This puts the Teknovus chipset at parity with Passave allowing Teknovus to compete for the NTT/Mitsubishi business. Also recent proposals for 10 Gbit/s EPON give Teknovus additional momentum. Nyquist Capital speculates that Teknovus is now an attractive acquisition target. Filed under: Business and Technology Comments: [...]

Eugene:

You run a great set of websites, thank you for commenting.

Press announcements from China are usually meaningless. They are simply PR done as a favor, or as a way to manipulate suppliers. They are without merit more often than not.
When you really win the business in China, everyone tries to keep it a secret. There is no advantage to the equipment company tipping off what vendor is selected. When it is to their advantage to make such an announcement, it is done.

It is possible Broadlight won the GPON business, but I'm not aware of Huawei winning (or bidding?) for G-PON business.

Lan Networks using VDSL are a cheaper alternative in high-density installations. No different than wiring up an office, except the switch needs to have features that firewall users from each other, something that the latest generation of enterprise switches from Broadcom can do.

For China, Huawei recently signed a contract with Broadlight
http://www.ftthblog.com/huawei-selects-broadlight-components
(I believe for GPON chips). Will this have any bearing? Also, plz. see todays story in Business 2.0 http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2006/01/01/8368133/index.htm
LAN networks as opposed to PON or Active Ethernet may be a viable alternative in densely populated areas (expecially in China).

Thank you for the nice post. One minor comment, though. KDDI was mistakenly referred as a Korean carrier. It is a Japanese operator.
